Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST)

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST) was developed in 1984 as a response to disproportionately high levels of unemployment among women and the difficulties experienced by women attempting to enter the workforce.

During the course of development, it became apparent that the most disadvantaged women, in terms of training and employment opportunities, were visible minorities. As a result of those findings, a plan was implemented to create a technical and life skills training program specific to the needs of visible minority women residing in Windsor-Essex. WEST, a non-profit corporation and registered charitable organization, is the realization of that initiative.

With funding from Human Resources Development Canada, WEST opened its doors in February 1987, offering unique training opportunities for women from Windsor-Essex and around the globe. Through skills enhancement and volunteer placements, visible minority women have been prepared for entry to employment and have moved closer to achieving the success they desire.

✨ Participants from our LEAD Program Intake 7 recently spent an inspiring and informative day at St. Clair College, centred on learning, career growth, and future planning. The visit began with an interactive Job Search Strategies workshop led by the Genesis Career Services team, where participants strengthened their understanding of effective job search strategies and interview skills, essential tools for today’s competitive workforce. The group also enjoyed a guided campus tour, exploring various programs, student supports, and learning environments that sparked interest in further education and training pathways. We sincerely thank St. Clair College for their welcoming hospitality and ongoing partnership in supporting and empowering young women💼✨#WESTOfWindsor #StClairCollege #CareerDevelopment #WomenInWorkforce #CommunityPartnerships ... Our settlement team had an incredible time at the Youth Leading Change Symposium, connecting with students from multiple schools, sharing information about our programs and services, and building meaningful relationships with community partners and organizations. We were especially proud to wear pink in honour of Pink Shirt Day, standing together against bullying and in support of youth empowerment, inclusion, and kindness. 💗 When young voices are empowered, real change begins. 🌟

As we close out Black History Month, we take a moment to honour a trailblazer whose impact continues to shape Canada today, Jean Augustine, Former Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada.

Over 30 years ago, in 1995, she made history by introducing the motion in the House of Commons to officially recognize February as Black History Month in Canada. Because of her leadership and advocacy, Canada now has a dedicated time each year to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and legacy of Black Canadians, past, present, and future.

Her work reminds us that recognition is not just about reflection, but about continuing the journey toward equity, inclusion, and opportunity for all.

Let us continue to learn, celebrate, and uplift Black voices, not just in February, but every day.
