Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST)

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST) was developed in 1984 as a response to disproportionately high levels of unemployment among women and the difficulties experienced by women attempting to enter the workforce.

During the course of development, it became apparent that the most disadvantaged women, in terms of training and employment opportunities, were visible minorities. As a result of those findings, a plan was implemented to create a technical and life skills training program specific to the needs of visible minority women residing in Windsor-Essex. WEST, a non-profit corporation and registered charitable organization, is the realization of that initiative.

With funding from Human Resources Development Canada, WEST opened its doors in February 1987, offering unique training opportunities for women from Windsor-Essex and around the globe. Through skills enhancement and volunteer placements, visible minority women have been prepared for entry to employment and have moved closer to achieving the success they desire.

✨ Meet Jasmine Captan

In celebration of Black History Month, WEST is proud to highlight our incredible Black employees whose leadership and dedication continue to uplift our community.

Of Liberian and Lebanese descent, Jasmine studied Criminology at the University of Windsor and Forensics at Humber College. She is the Young Women in LEAD Program Coordinator and also oversees WEST’s Communications and Social Media. A proud mom and dedicated professional, Jasmine has spent five years serving at WEST, where she plays a vital role in empowering young women through leadership development, employment readiness, and personal and professional development. Through both program delivery and storytelling, she ensures that the impact of WEST’s work is not only felt but clearly seen and heard.

When asked what Black History Month means to her, Jasmine reflects:

“Black History Month reminds me that the sacrifices and resilience of those before us created opportunities we walk in today. As a mother, it is deeply personal, it’s about helping build a future where my daughter and the next generation of black women grow up knowing their worth, their strength, and that there are no limits to what they can achieve.”

When asked, “What impact do you hope your work has?” Jasmine shares:

“I hope my work inspires young women to believe in their abilities, use their voices boldly, and pursue opportunities without limitation. If even one young woman feels more confident stepping into her future, then the work is worth it.”

We are grateful for Jasmine’s passion, creativity, and commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders.
